Newspapers Review: Four shot dead on Gaza b Israeli soldiers, say dailies

RAMALLAH, April 21, 2018 (WAFA) – Israeli soldiers shot and killed four Palestinians, including a minor, on the Gaza border in the fourth Friday in the Great Return March, the three Palestinian dailies said in their top news item in the Saturday issue.

Details about the protests and the unabated Israeli murder and injury of a large number of Palestinians were highlighted on the front page of the dailies with pictures. They said four were shot dead in cold blood in spite of the non-violent character of the protests and over 700 injured, many of them in critical condition.

The papers also reported local and international reaction to the collective killing and injury of Palestinian civilians in Gaza, including a statement by the presidency condemning the killing and saying that the  Palestinian Authority is going to ask the United Nations for protection for the Palestinian people under Israeli occupation.

The papers also reported on the protests in the West Bank, which were also crushed by the heavy and trigger-happy arm of the Israeli military. Dozens of Palestinians were injured, some shot by live ammunition.

In addition, the papers reported on Israeli settlers’ vandalism and thuggery in the occupied territories and said that settlers chopped down 100 olive trees in a Palestinian farm in the north of the West Bank and vandalized 45 vehicles in a village north of Ramallah.

They said UN special envoy Nikolay Mladenov has called for an international investigation into the Israeli army killing of Palestinians.

In other news, al-Ayyam said the Israeli municipality of West Jerusalem handed over demolition notices to several Palestinian families in Silwan, a neighborhood in occupied East Jerusalem, under the pretext of building without permit.

Al-Quds said Hamas is considering sponsoring conferences that would serve as alternative to the Palestinian National Council, the parliament in exile, that is expected to convene in Ramallah on April 30 and which Hamas and other organizations are boycotting.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida quoted the security forces warning against fake news by whom it said were “banned militias” that aim to smear the name of the prime minister. This had to do with the murder of a Palestinian hotel worker in Ramallah two months ago.

The papers said while Guatemala has declared that May 14, the Palestinian Nakba (catastrophe) Day, is going to be celebrated as day of “friendship with Israel,” the Polish president has declared that Poland has no plans to move its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem as reported earlier.

They also reported on the shelling at Yarmouk refugee camp near Damascus and expression of concern by the Palestine United Nations refugee agency, UNRWA, for the welfare and life of thousands of Palestinian refugees who live in the camp.
