Newspapers Review: Arab summit focus of dailies

 

RAMALLAH, April 16, 2018 (WAFA) – News about the Arab summit that took place in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, hit the front page headlines of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies on Monday.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida, al-Ayyam and al-Quds said that Jerusalem was at the center of the summit discussions to the point where Saudi Arabia’s King Salman named the 29th summit the “Jerusalem Summit.”

The dailies said that the Arab summit supported the peace vision of President Mahmoud Abbas, who said that US administration has violated international resolutions by announcing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

Abbas said that his efforts to achieve reconciliation and unite Palestinian land and people did not and will not stop, stressing that he will not abandon Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

King Abdullah II of Jordan affirmed the eternal right of Palestinians to Jerusalem and Arab leaders’ adherence to the Arab Peace Initiative, while rejecting any actions to change the historical and legal status of Jerusalem.

The papers also said that Saudi Arabia has allocated $50 million in support of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) and $150 million in support of the Islamic Endowment (Waqf) in Jerusalem.

Al-Quds said in highlight that Arab leaders rejected US President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

The Saudi king affirmed that the Palestinian issue is a top Arab priority and will remain so until the Palestinian people regain their legitimate rights and establish their independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Al-Ayyam said that Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi called for ending the Palestinian division.

The paper said that Saudi Arabia‘s Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir said that the Arab peace initiative is still in place.

The dailies said that Tunisia will host the next Arab summit.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida and al-Quds said that today marks the 30th anniversary of the assassination of Palestinian military leader Khalil al-Wazir, known as Abu Jihad.

Al-Quds said that Israeli authorities are imposing a total closure on the occupied West Bank and the Gaza Strip for three days this week as Israel marks 70 years for its creation.
