Newspaper Review: US, UK, France’s strikes on Syria focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, April 15, 2018 (WAFA) – News about the US, UK and French strikes on Syria hit the front pages of the three Arabic Palestinian dailies on Sunday.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida, al-Ayyam and al-Quds said that the US, UK and France launched airstrikes on multiple locations in Syria after the Assad regime reportedly used chemical weapons on civilians near Damascus.

Al-Quds said that the UN Security Council blocked Russia’s request to condemn the strikes on Syria.

It also said that dozens of Palestinians gathered on Saturday at the center of the northern West Bank city of Nablus in a show of solidarity with Syria following the strike.

France is willing to revive the political process in Syria, according to the paper.

Al-Ayyam and al-Quds said that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the attacks, saying that Israel is fully supportive of US President Donald Trump’s decision against the use of chemical weapons.

The three dailies also reported that the 9th Arab League Summit is set to take place today in Dhahran city, Saudi Arabia, with the participation of President Mahmoud Abbas.

The papers said that Abbas met on Saturday with his Egyptian counterpart Abdul-Fattah el-Sisi and his Tunisian counterpart Beji Caid Essebsi separately on the sideline of the summit in Dhahran, where they discussed the overall situation in the Middle East.

The President also met with Mikhail Bogdanov, special envoy of the Russian President for the Middle East and Deputy Foreign Minister and discussed the latest developments in the Middle East, particularly the Palestinian issue.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said that Azzam al-Ahmad, member of the Fatah Movement executive committee, said the upcoming session of the Palestinian National Council (PNC) will be held on April 30 and will be attended by Arab and international officials.

The three dailies reported that four Palestinians were killed and others injured when an auto rickshaw exploded in the city of Rafah, in southern Gaza Strip.

Dozens of Israeli settlers under Israeli forces protection Saturday stormed and attacked residents of the village of al-Tawana, in Masafer Yatta area to the south of Hebron, in the southern West Bank, and threw stones at their homes, according to al-Ayyam.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said that Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah on Saturday held the Israeli government responsible for the action of Jewish settlers in the occupied Palestinian territories, the latest of which was the attempt to set on fire a mosque in the northern West Bank village of Aqraba.

Al-Ayyam said that US Senator Bernie Sanders sent a letter to the Congress urging the US to take action in order to end the siege on the Gaza Strip.
