Newspapers Review: Raising the flag protest in Gaza focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, April 14, 2018 (WAFA) – Since the three Palestinian Arabic dailies came out early Saturday before the attack on Syria, the attack was therefore not reported on and the three papers gave prominence on their front page to mainly news about the third Friday of protests at the Gaza border with Israel.

The protests, titled “Friday of raising the flag”, witnessed the participation of thousands of people and ended up with the Israeli army killing one protester and wounding hundreds others, most from live ammunition, some of them reporters where one was said to be in critical condition, and medics.

The papers printed pictures from the protest showing the thousands of people gathering at the border with the Palestinian flags flying high in the area.

They reported on calls by the United Nations chief for an investigation into the Israeli killing of Palestinians.

They said the next Friday protest is going to be titled “Friday of the martyrs and prisoners.”

The three papers also reported on the attempt by Jewish settlers to set fire to a mosque in the northern West Bank village of Aqraba. The fire gutted part of the mosque.

The papers said President Mahmoud Abbas condemned the arson and said crimes by settlers come under Israeli army protection.

They also reported on the protests in the West Bank, which also left dozens of Palestinians injured from Israeli army gunfire and tear gas.

Al-Ayyam quoted Palestine Liberation Organization general secretary, Saeb Erekat, calling for opening an international probe into what he called “the crimes and massacres of the occupation.”

Al-Quds said an Egyptian security official is going to meet Hamas leaders in Gaza on Saturday.

It also said ships are going to sail from Europe to Gaza on Nakba Day, May 15.

The paper said Amnesty International has renewed its call on Israel to release Palestine protest icon, 17-year-old Ahed Tamimi.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida quoted Palestine’s ambassador to Holland, Rawan Suleiman, saying after meeting with the new president of the International Criminal Court Judge Chile Eboe-Osuji that the ICC is capable of bringing justice to the Palestinian people.

The three papers reported on the possibility of an attack on Syria, reviewing the repercussions of such an attack, which did actually start after the papers were printed and therefore was not reported on in their Saturday issue.
