Newspapers Review: Remarks by President Abbas at Fatah meeting focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, April 9, 2018 (WAFA) – News about President Mahmoud Abbas’ statements during the Fatah Central Committee meeting on Sunday hit the front pages of the three Palestinian Arabic newspapers on Monday.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida, al-Ayyam and al-Quds reported that Abbas said that the next Arab summit is important, amidst what’s currently going on in the occupied city of Jerusalem.

The dailies highlighted that the meeting called on Arab leaders to support the peace vision that was presented by Abbas at the UN Security Council.

The papers reported that 46-year-old Mohammad Anbar, a wounded prisoner from the city of Tulkarm in the occupied West Bank, died at an Israeli hospital where he was admitted after being shot by Israelis.

They also said that Israeli artillery Sunday shelled Palestinian agricultural land in Juhr al-Dik area, southeast of Gaza city. No casualties were reported.

Al-Quds said that Israeli police shot and detained a Palestinian youth after he allegedly attempted to carry out a stabbing attack near the illegal Israeli settlement of Mishor Adumim, east of Jerusalem.

A statement PLO Executive Committee Member Hanan Ashrawi marking the 70th anniversary of the Deir Yassin massacre by Israeli forces was reported in al-Quds. She said that “Israel should admit its culpability and make reparations to the Palestinian people for the extensive destruction and suffering inflicted on them, including compensation and restitution for lost properties and human suffering.”

The papers also reported a statement by Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman who virtually called for killing Palestinian civilians when he said that “there are no innocent people in Gaza.” Lieberman also said that Palestinian journalist Yasser Mortaja, who was shot while covering the Gaza border protests and later died of his wounds, was using a drone at the time of the shooting.

However, Israeli media reports quoted the army saying that investigation proved that Murtaja, or anyone else to for that matter, was not using a drone when shot.

Al-Quds said that dozens of journalists, rights’ activists and representatives of political factions called during protests in Gaza, Nablus and Bethlehem for an investigation into Murtaja’s shooting.

Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) Fatou Bensouda said in a statement on Israel’s crimes against Palestinian protesters in Gaza that violence against civilians could constitute war crime, as reported in the three dailies.

Al-Ayyam said that the Arab League said in a statement that the Israeli violence in Gaza could result in more escalation.

Lebanese President Michel Aoun said that US President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel is an attack on international rights.
