Newspapers Review: Dailies report on rising tension on the Gaza border with Israel

RAMALLAH, April 5, 2018 (WAFA) – The rising tension on the Gaza border with Israel as Palestinians prepare to set more than 10,000 tires on fire on Friday was reported on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies on Thursday.

Al-Ayyam said dozens injured when Israeli soldier stationed on the Gaza border showered Palestinians on the other side of the fence, particularly near Khan Younis in the south of the Gaza Strip, with tear gas causing suffocation cases.

It said Palestinian protesters at the border raised flags of Arab and European countries. A picture of that event was printed on the front page.

Meanwhile, according to al-Quds, Palestinians in Bureij refugee camp in Gaza laid Ahmad Arafeh to rest. Arafeh was shot and killed by Israeli soldiers on the border the day before.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said five people were injured by live bullets fired by Israeli soldiers east of Gaza. It said the Israeli human rights group, B’Tselem, is going to launch on Thursday a campaign calling on soldiers not to open fire at the Palestinian protesters.

Al-Ayyam said the European Union missions in Jerusalem and Ramallah called on Israel to respect the rights of Palestinian children following reports of a rise in the number of children detained by Israel, including in East Jerusalem.

The three papers quoted President Mahmoud Abbas telling a Canadian delegation that Palestinian hands are still extended for peace based on the two-state solution.

Al-Quds reported about Arab efforts to change the US peace plan, which is still a secret.

It said also that in a rare move, the newspaper is supporting Jerome Segal to run for a US senate seat for state of Maryland because of his positions in support of the Palestinians.

It said Israel has decided to close the Gaza border crossing on Thursday and Friday for the Jewish Passover holiday.

Al-Quds also quoted Hamas officials in Gaza calling for convening a Palestinian National Council session that would include all the factions. The session is set to be held on April 30 in Ramallah.

The three papers also reported on international issues, including the summit meeting between the Russian, Turkish and Iranian presidents.
