RAMALLAH, September 14, 2015 (WAFA) – The clashes between Israeli
police and Palestinians at Al-Aqsa mosque compound for the second consecutive
day as the former stormed the mosque compound, firing rubber-coated steel
bullets and stun grenades, leading to the injury of several Palestinians, hit
the front page headlines in Palestinian daily newspapers.
Al-Quds reported that Israeli special forces stormed al-Qibli
mosque, the southern main building in the compound, and attacked worshippers,
firing tear-gas canisters and rubber-coated steel bullets at them.
Al-Quds also reported that as a result of the Israeli crackdown on
Palestinian worshippers inside the mosque, 110 worshippers were reportedly
injured, the mosque windows were destroyed and the mosque’s prayer mats were
partially burnt.
Al-Ayyam reported in this regard that Israeli occupation forces
turned the mosque into a battle field in order to facilitate settlers’ intrusions
into the mosque compound. Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported that Israeli occupation
forces and extremist settlers “desecrated” the mosque.
President Mahmoud Abbas was reported in the three dailies as
condemning the Israeli crackdown on the mosque and stating that he would not
stand idly by before these attacks.
Meanwhile, the Arab League was reported in al-Quds newspaper as
warning Israel against proceeding with the provocation of Arabs and Muslims
feelings.
It was also reported in al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida as warning
Israel against attempting to implement the temporal and spatial division of the
mosque.
Furthermore, al-Quds and al-Ayyam reported UN Special Coordinator
for the Middle East Peace Process Nickolay Mladenov as voicing concerns over
provocations and violence in and around the mosque compound.
Al-Ayyam also said that Egypt and Jordan condemned the Israeli
crackdown on the mosque and called on Israel to halt its attacks.
Al-Quds and al-Ayyam printed two different photos featuring
Palestinians cleaning up the debris inside the mosque following the clashes
between Palestinians and Israeli police just hours before the start of the
Jewish New Year.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida printed two different photos featuring a
Palestinian taking a burnt carpet out of the mosque and part of the
confrontations between Palestinians and Israeli police in the Old City of
Jerusalem.
Furthermore, al-Hayat al-Jadida reported on Greek Orthodox Patriarch
of Jerusalem Theophilos III as slamming the construction of the annexation wall
between Jerusalem and Bethlehem as a “historical tragedy”.
