Israel issues 24 administration detention orders against Palestinian detainees

RAMALLAH, April 9, 2017 (WAFA) – Since the beginning of April, Israeli authorities have issued 24 administration detention orders, without charge or trial, against Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons, said the Palestinian Prisoners’ Society (PPS) in a statement on Sunday.

Mahmoud al-Halabi, PPS attorney, said that the issued administration detention periods ranging from three to six renewable months.

Administrative detention allows for internment without charge or trial for six-month intervals that can be renewed indefinitely. The policy has been strongly criticized by the international community as well as both Israeli and Palestinian rights activists.

According to a statistic by the Palestinian Prisoner Support and Human Rights Association, the total number of Palestinian political prisoners in Israeli prisons is 6,500, with 536 of them being administrative detainees.
