Protesters clash with Israeli soldiers near Ramallah, photojournalist injured

RAMALLAH, Monday, September 09, 2019 (WAFA) – A Palestinian photojournalist was today injured in the neck from a rubber bullet fired by Israeli soldiers during a protest march at an Israeli army checkpoint in the north of Ramallah, reports said.

Dozens of Birzeit University students and activists marched from downtown Ramallah to the northern checkpoint known as the DCO to protest the death of Palestinian prisoner Bassam Sayeh while in custody. Palestinians charged that Sayeh, who suffered from cancer, died of medical negligence by the Israel Prisons Service.

Israeli soldiers stationed at the checkpoint fired teargas and rubber bullets at the protesters lightly injuring the photojournalist in the neck while others suffered suffocation from the teargas and stun grenades.

Meanwhile, dozens of Palestinians held today a sit-in protest outside the Red Cross office in Ramallah to protest Sayeh’s death and to demand intervention from the Red Cross to help other ill Palestinians who may die in prison due to negligence.

Participants in the protest called for by the Prisoners Commission, the Prisoner Society and other civil society groups held Israel responsible for Sayeh’s death and calling for holding Israel accountable to neglecting the ill prisoners.
