Information Ministry urges Security Council to implement resolution on journalists

RAMALLAH, Thursday, January 03, 2019 (WAFA) – The Ministry of Information urged the president of the United Nations Security Council to implement resolution 2222 (2015) regarding safeguarding journalists and accountability for attacks against Palestinian journalists in the occupied territories as well.

“Not a day passes without the Israeli occupation army committing a new crime against Palestinian journalists and media,” it said. Today, it added, “Israel started the new year, 2019, by shooting at point blank at Palestine TV crew while covering an event in the northern West Bank city of Nablus injuring its correspondent with a rubber bullet in the leg.”

It said Israeli soldiers killed two photojournalists in 2018 while covering the March of Return protests on the Gaza border with Israel – Yasser Murtaja and Ahmad Abu Hussein - and injured many others during the year. Israeli forces also raided several media institutions in the occupied territories, including the official WAFA news agency headquarters in Ramallah, and holding 19 journalists in prison.

The ministry called on the Security Council to enforce the text of that resolution in the occupied Palestinian territories and hold Israel accountable for its actions against Palestinian journalists.
