Newspaper review: Palestinian victory in Pan-Arab singing show focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, February 27, 2017 (WAFA) – The winning of Palestinian contestant Yacoub Shahin, in the pan-Arab singing show “Arab Idol”, was the main focus of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies on Sunday.  

Al-Quds, al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported that Shahin from the city of Bethlehem was crowned the winner of the fourth season of Arab Idol.

Shahin, who competed against Amir Dandan, another Palestinian from the village of Majd el-Krum, and Yemeni contestant Ammar al-Azaki, becomes the second Palestinian to win the title after singer Mohammad Assaf from the Gaza Strip won the second season in 2013.

Al-Ayyam and al-Quds reported that three Palestinian workers were killed as a result of inhaling toxic gas in a tunnel between Egypt and the Gaza Strip.

It also reported on a statement by Hamas saying there is no excuse for the Egyptian authorities to use such dangerous measures with the people of Gaza.

A statement by German Chancellor Angela Merkel was reported in the al-Quds, in which she said the two-state solution is the only realistic solution for the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

Al-Quds published a statement by Saeb Erekat, secretary-general of the Palestinian Liberation Organization, that the Palestinian recognition of Israel will be revoked if the US moves its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

President Mahmoud Abbas’ meeting with officials of the Palestinian Liberation Organization in Lebanon was reported in the three dailies. They discussed the situation of the Palestinian refugees Lebanon’s camps. Abbas stressed the important of a sustainable security in these refugees’ camps.

According to al-Quds, Israel said it is willing to reconsider issuing a work visa to Human Rights Watch staff 24 hours after news emerged that a researcher form the organization was denied visa to enter Israel citing support of Palestinian propaganda.    

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said that the Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro reiterated his country’s support for Palestine in all international levels.

The paper reported on a statement by Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah, during his visit to the injured police members who were run over by an illegal vehicle in the city of Tulkarm.

Arab-Israeli Knesset member Ahmad al-Tibi’s said he considers [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin} Netanyahu’s government to be the most extreme yet in the history of Israel.

Al-Quds also said that February 25th marked the 23rd anniversary of al-Ibrahimi mosque Massacre in Hebron.
