Newspaper Review: Coup Attempt in Turkey, Bastille Day Attack Focus of Dailies

RAMALLAH, July 16, 2016 (WAFA) – The military coup attempt in Turkey and the Bastille Day attack in the French city of Nice hit the front page headlines in Palestinian dailies.

Covering the military coup attempt in their main front page news articles, al-Quds and al-Ayyam said the Turkish military announced it had seized power and declared curfew and the imposition of martial law in the country.

They also reported Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as stating that the coup attempt would fail.

Covering the Bastille Day attack in Nice, al-Quds said the world was shocked and stunned following the attack that claimed the lives of 84 people in Nice.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said following the attack, the world has united, offering support for France and pledging to continue to counter terrorism, while al-Quds described it as a “carnage”.

The three dailies said President Mahmoud Abbas sent his condolences to French President Francois Hollande and declared his support and solidarity with the French people.

Furthermore, al-Quds said Hamas officially announced it would agree that municipal elections be held and called for insuring integrity and respecting elections results.

Al-Ayyam said in this regard Hamas officially welcomed local elections in the West Bank and Gaza Strip and pledged that it would work for the success of these elections.

It is worth noting in this regard that the local and municipal elections or polls would be held on October 8 throughout the West Bank and Gaza.

Al-Quds added that the Islamic Jihad movement also announced that it would run for the elections.

Regarding the Israeli siege on Gaza, al-Quds said Israel has allowed the entry of livestock into the besieged coastal enclave.

Highlighting weekly Friday demonstrations, al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida said several Palestinians were shot and injured by Israeli forces during confrontations across the West Bank and Gaza. Al-Quds noted seven Palestinians were shot and injured.

They also said Israeli settlers pelted Palestinian-registered vehicles with stones along the Wadi Qana Road between Salfit and Qalqiliya in the northern West Bank.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida also said Israeli forces handcuffed and detained 15 activists as they were preparing for the establishment of a cultural cinema in the Hebron neighborhood of Tal Rumeida.

Finally, al-Ayyam said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sent a letter to President Mahmoud Abbas, accusing the Palestinian Authority of “incitement”.
