Israel places 36 Palestinians in administrative detention

RAMALLAH, September 20, 2016 (WAFA) – Israel issued administrative detention orders against 36 Palestinian detainees, placing them in jail without a charge or trial, the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society (PPS) said on Tuesday.

PPS lawyer Mahmoud Halabi said 19 orders were issued against detainees who have spent months and years in detention without charge or trial, whereas the remainder received new administrative orders.

The period of the detention varied between three to six months.

Administrative detention is the imprisonment of Palestinians without charge or trial on the basis of secret evidence for up to six-month periods that could be renewed constantly by Israeli military courts.

Palestinian detainees have continuously resorted to open-ended hunger strikes as a way to protest their illegal administrative detention and to demand an end to this policy, which violates international law.
