Abu Rudeineh: UN vote carries a strong message to US and Israel

RAMALLAH, June 14, 2018 (WAFA) – The vote at the United Nations General Assembly calling for protection for the Palestinian people under Israeli occupation carries a strong message to the United States and Israel that the world stands alongside right, justice and international legality regardless of the pressures and intimidation, said Nabil Abu Rudeineh, spokesman for President Mahmoud Abbas, on Thursday.

He said the fact that only six nations stood with the US in voting against the resolution while 120 countries voted in favor is an important political lesson.

Abu Rudeineh said in a statement the UN vote proved that the Palestinians can withstand all attempts and conspiracies to liquidate their national cause, mainly the so-called deal of the century, which is aimed at the Arab countries in an attempt to reshape their future against the will of their people.

However, he added, “the more powerful message of the UN vote was directed at Hamas when Palestine refused to accept the US amendment that wanted to classify Hamas as a terrorist organization.”

Abu Rudeineh stressed that rejecting the American-Israeli amendment showed beyond doubt that the Palestinian leadership will not accept or allow anyone to mess with the national issues regardless of the price in spite of the possibility that the resolution might have failed due to US pressure on many UN member states as the Palestinians have insisted on voting on the Palestinian text without any changes or the US amendments.

“The Palestinian steadfastness in the battle for Jerusalem and rejecting the US deal is not only in defense of Palestine and its holy places, but in defense of the future of the region and confronting attempts to reshape some of its countries in a way that does not agree with the aspirations of their people and their future,” he concluded.
