Israeli forces attack rally commemorating Hebron Mosque massacre

HEBRON, Friday, February 22, 2019 (WAFA) – Israeli occupation forces on Friday attacked a nonviolent rally in the heart of Hebron which commemorated the 25th anniversary of the Ibrahimi Mosque Massacre, injuring at least one child by rubber-coated bullets and causing others to suffocate from teargas inhalation.

The rally also called on Israeli occupation authorities to reopen the Shuhada Street in heart of the city’s Old City quarter and for a complete withdrawal of Israeli forces ans settlers from the city.

The protesters waved the flags of Palestine and chanted slogans that condemned Israel’s forcible expulsion of the Temporary International Presence in Hebron team.

On February 25, 1994, an Israeli settler opened fire at Muslims observing the dawn prayers inside the Ibrahimi Mosque in Hebron on a Ramadan morning killing 29 worshippers and injuring 150 others before he was caught and killed by the crowds.

The settler, an American-Israeli physician identified as Barouch Goldstein who resided in the ultra-fanatic Kiryat Arba settlement in Hebron, walked into the mosque as a large number of Muslim Ramadan worshippers, mainly elderly, were praying and opened fire at random from his Israeli army-issued machine gun leading to the large number of deaths and injuries.

To make matter even worse, Israeli soldiers, who were in the vicinity of the mosque, closed the doors to the mosque and prevented the worshippers from running for their lives. They also prevented people from outside to enter it to help in evacuating the dead and wounded.
