Two Palestinian photojournalists win awards at prestigious US picture competition

 

RAMALLAH, Thursday, February 14, 2019 (WAFA) – Two Palestinian photojournalists based in the Gaza Strip won awards at the 76th Pictures of the Year International (POYI) of the Missouri School of Journalism in Columbia, Missouri, USA, one of the most prestigious schools of journalism worldwide.

Mohammad Salem Jadallah, who works for Reuters news agency, told WAFA that his picture of brothers of a Palestinian killed by Israeli army gunfire at the Gaza border with Israel on June 18, 2018 weeping their dead brother at Shifa Hospital in Gaza City has won the Award of Excellence for the Picture Story category.

Mohammad Asad, a freelance photojournalist, also won the Award of Excellence for his picture of Faris Sirsawi, 12, as he holds on to a stretcher while paramedics were trying to evacuate him after he was shot in the chest from the Gaza  border area with Israel. Sirsawi died shortly after.

POY is the oldest and most prestigious photojournalism program and competition in the world. Winning photographs are usually posted in exhibitions in New York City.
