RAMALLAH, Wednesday, November 21, 2018 (WAFA) - Saeb Erekat, secretary general of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), denounced on Wednesday US efforts at the United Nations to condemn Hamas, stressing that Israel should be condemned for its war crimes record against the Palestinian people.
Erekat was reacting in a tweet to efforts by outgoing US ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, to get the UN General Assembly (UNGA) to condemn Hamas for firing rockets at Israel, which came in retaliation for Israeli air force pounding of the Gaza Strip with hundreds of bombs, demolishing high rises and killing at least 15 people.
Observers saw in Haley’s effort as a last attempt to serve Israel’s interest before she leaves her post at the end of this year.
Erekat described in a tweet Haley’s draft resolution to the UNGA calling for the condemnation of Hamas as “an attempt to overturn the facts.”
“The international community should condemn and hold the Israeli occupation authority accountable for its continued war crimes against the Palestinian people,” he said, calling on the international community “to thwart Haley’s project.”
