Monetary Authority replaces damaged paper money in Gaza with new ones

RAMALLAH, June 12, 2018 (WAFA) – The Palestinian Monetary Authority (PMA), which functions as a central bank, has succeeded in replacing damaged paper money notes of different currencies in Gaza with new ones, PMA Governor Azzam Shawwa said on Tuesday.

“Extensive efforts exerted by the Monetary Authority with all concerned parties to meet the needs of the citizens in the Gaza Strip and alleviate their suffering resulted in the replacement of damaged currencies with new paper money notes, including small ones,” he said in a statement.

He said damaged notes in US dollar and Jordanian dinar were removed from the market in Gaza.

Gaza is under strict Israeli blockade since 2006 and entry of money into Gaza requires Israeli approval, which is usually difficult to obtain.
