Government to restore electric power to Gaza

RAMALLAH, January 3, 2018 (WAFA) – The Palestinian government agreed on Wednesday to restore 50 megawatt of electric power to the Gaza Strip and has asked Israel to resume supplying the Strip with the power, according to government statement.

It  said that it took this decision to ease the hardships faced by Gaza residents.

The Palestinian Authority’s (PA) official in charge of liaison with Israel, Hussein al-Sheikh, said in a different statement that at the instructions of President Mahmoud Abbas, his Civil Affairs Authority officially asked Israel to resume supplying 50 megawatt of electric power to the Gaza Strip, which will bring the power supply to the way it was before the PA has stopped payment for the Gaza electric power supplied by Israel.

The PA stopped the payments after Hamas, the de facto power in Gaza, failed to pay the cost of the supply to the PA. The decision caused severe cut in power supply to Gaza that left only four hours a day of power.

The decision is bound to improve living and health conditions in Gaza as power supply returns to normal.
