JENIN, Thursday, January 17, 2019 (WAFA) – Palestinian detainee in Israeli jails Sameh Mohammad Kmail, who was scheduled to be released from Israeli jails on Thursday, was unexpectedly placed in administrative detention, without charge or trial, for six months, according to the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society (PPS).
Kmail, who comes from the town of Qabatiya in the West Bank, was arrested in October 2018, and was sentenced to three months in jail. He was supposed to be released today, but his family said they were surprised that an Israeli court had placed him in detention for six more months, without charge or trial.
Israel’s widely condemned policy of administrative detention allows detention of Palestinians without charge or trial for renewable intervals usually ranging between three and six months based on undisclosed evidence that even a detainee’s lawyer is barred from viewing.
