Newspaper Review: Dismantling Jerusalem Neighborhood Homes Focus of Dailies

RAMALLAH, May 17, 2016 (WAFA) – Dismantling EU-donated mobile homes (caravans) in the Jabal al-Baba neighborhood in the outskirts of the Jerusalem village of al-Eizariya hit the front page headlines in the dailies.

The three dailies reported that Israeli forces dismantled and seized 12 Palestinian mobile homes in Jabal al-Baba, displacing 90 Palestinians.

The dispute between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and ‘Defense’ Minister Moshe Yaalon after the latter delivered a speech urging military officers to speak their minds also hit the front page headlines in the dailies.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported that Netanyahu summoned Yaalon after the latter made remarks urging senior military officers to speak their minds. Al-Quds described the dispute as a crisis.

It is worth noting that Yaalon’s remarks were perceived as a public show of support for Deputy Head of Israeli forces Major General Yair Golan, who on the eve of Holocaust Remembrance Day made remarks comparing contemporary Israeli society to Nazi Germany.

Furthermore, al-Quds reported that Israeli forces shot and injured a Palestinian worker to the south of Jerusalem.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam reported that a Palestinian youth was detained for allegedly stabbing an Israeli settler outside of Damascus Gate in Jerusalem.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam reported that the Jewish Agency’s Settlement Department approved a ‘neighborhood’ of Ali Zahav settlement in the northern West Bank district of Salfit as a new settlement.

Al-Ayyam reported that the Palestinian communities of Masafer Yatta, south of Hebron, in the southern West Bank refused an Israeli military’s proposal that they evacuate their communities for long periods for military drills. It noted that drills are used as a pretext to forcibly displace Palestinians.

It added that two settlers stopped a bus driving Palestinian workers at gun point in the Bethlehem settlement of Afrath before beating them up.

It also reported that Save Jewish Jerusalem, an Israeli settler movement, has launched a campaign calling for placing 22 Palestinian villages outside the borders of Jerusalem.
