After meeting factions in Gaza, CEC chairman says elections are close

GAZA, Monday, October 28, 2019 (WAFA) - Hanna Nasser, chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC), said today after meeting with the factions in the Gaza Strip that he feels the general elections are very close.

Nasser travelled to Gaza heading a CEC delegation at the instructions of President Mahmoud Abbas to prepare for holding general elections, not held since 2006.

"Today we were happy to have met with the leaders of the Palestinian factions and we have agreed on a number of issues related to the elections and the national situation," Nasser said at a press conference shortly after the meeting. "We feel that we are very close to holding elections."

Nasser expressed hope that holding elections will reunite the country divided since Hamas takeover of the Gaza Strip by force in 2007.

President Abbas said at the United Nations last month that he is going to hold general elections in the Palestinian territories.
