Clashes erupt as Israeli forces evict worshippers from Al-Aqsa

JERUSALEM, Sunday, May 12, 2019 (WAFA) – Israeli occupation forces after midnight on Saturday forcibly evicted worshipers from the holy Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied East Jerusalem, which led to confrontations across the Old City of Jerusalem.

Large numbers of Israeli occupation police broke into the holy mosque and forcibly evicted the worshipers following Tarawih prayers, threatening them of banning them to enter the mosque for long periods.

The eviction of the worshipers led to confrontations in the Old City area in which the Israeli police used tear gas against protesters. The police reportedly arrested at least one Palestinian in the Damascus Gate area while several others sustained suffocation from gas inhalation.

The al-Aqsa compound is the third-holiest site for Muslims. It is located in the Old City of East Jerusalem, which Israel annexed in 1967 - in a move never recognized by the international community - as part of its occupation of the West Bank.
