RAMALLAH, July 21, 2017 (WAFA) – President Mahmoud Abbas Friday asked the US administration to intervene to compel Israel to back down from its measures in East Jerusalem’s flashpoint Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.

Abbas discussed the spiraling tensions in East Jerusalem in a phone call with US President Donald Trump’s top advisor and son-in-law Jared Kushner.

He asked the US administration to immediately intervene in order to compel Israel to back down from its recent measures in East Jerusalem and the mosque compound.

He told Kushner the situation is “extremely dangerous and might spiral out of control” unless Israel backs down from its tightened measures in East Jerusalem and removes the metal detectors installed at the gates leading to the holy site.

He also held the Israeli government fully responsible for any ramifications resulting from its measures.

Meanwhile, Abbas is set Friday to convene an urgent meeting in Ramallah to address the spiraling tensions surround the mosque compound and take appropriate decisions in response to the Israeli cabinet’s decision to leave the metal detectors in place.

The meeting would be held for the Palestine Liberation Organization’s (PLO) Executive Committee and Fatah’s Revolutionary Council in Ramallah.
