RAMALLAH, Thursday, January 31, 2019 (WAFA) – The killing of 16-year-old Palestinian girl following an alleged stabbing attempt east of Jerusalem dominated the front page headlines in Palestinian Arabic dailies.
The dailies reported that Israeli forces shot dead Palestinian girl Samah Mubarak at al-Zaayim checkpoint, east of Jerusalem, with al-Ayyam describing the killing as an assassination.
Al-Quds reported that Riyad Shamasneh and Samir Nabahin were laid to their rest.
Shamasneh was killed by Israeli police following a pursuit in Jerusalem on Saturday, while Nabahin, 47, succumbed to wounds he sustained days earlier during March of Return protest, east of Bureij refugee camp in Gaza.
Additionally, the dailies reported that Israeli bulldozers demolished a Palestinian building in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Wadi al-Joz.
The first floor of the two-story building was constructed 20 years ago and had three stores, while the second floor was built five years ago and had three apartments.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida said Israeli bulldozers demolished a Palestinian residential building, two houses and several stores in Jerusalem.
Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida printed photos showing members of the Ja‘afreh family sitting on the rubble of their demolished house in the Jabal al-Mukkabir neighborhood on Jerusalem, while al-Ayyam printed a photo for Israeli troops escorting a bulldozer into Wadi al-Joz neighborhood.
Furthermore, al-Quds and al-Ayyam said that Israeli forces delivered demolition orders for houses and two schools in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Silwan and Hebron district.
On the other hand, al-Hayat al-Jadida opted to highlighted President Mahmoud Abbas’ statements about elections in its main front page news item.
Abbas was reported in al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida announcing that Palestinian parliamentary elections will be held in Jerusalem, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.
He was also reported in al-Ayyam expressing his keenness to achieve Palestinian national unity.
He was also reported in al-Hayat al-Jadida reaffirming his total rejection of US President Donald Trump’s Mideast plan, dubbed deal of the century, and reiterating that he will not accept the sole US mediation in the peace process.
Abbas made his statements during a meeting with a Russian delegation at his office in Ramallah.
The dailies spotlighted Israeli human rights group B‘Tselem’s report: Contrary to Shin Bet (ISA) and IDF statements: Saleh Barghouti was shot point-blank in apparent extrajudicial killing.
Moreover, al-Quds reported representatives of Palestinian prisoners providing details on their recent talks with the Israeli administration of Ofer prison.
It reported that US envoy Jason Greenblatt criticized the Palestinian Authority for showing support for Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
The dailies highlighted Amnesty International’s Destination: Occupation report revealing that digital tourism giants are profiting from "war crimes" by offering services in illegal Israeli settlements.
Following Amnesty International’s report, Secretary-General of the PLO’s Executive Committee Saeb Erekat was reported in al-Quds calling on the international community to issue the database of companies doing business with Israeli settlements.
He was also reported in al-Hayat al-Jadida announcing that US aid to the Palestinian Authority’s security services will end tomorrow at the PA’s request, a theme that was also covered in the other two dailies.
According to al-Quds, Israel has advanced a plan to build a project on the remaining part of the ancient Islamic cemetery of Mamilla in Jerusalem.
Furthermore, al-Quds and al-Ayyam reported United Nations officials slamming Israel for violating Palestinians’ right to education in the West Bank.
The statements on Israel’s ongoing interference in Palestinian schools were voiced in a joint statement issued by the Humanitarian Coordinator, Jamie McGoldrick, UNICEF Special Representative, Genevieve Boutin, and UNESCO.
According to al-Ayyam, Israeli settlers spray-painted racist graffiti on Palestinian vehicles in al-Lubban Ash-Sharqiya village, south of Nablus.
It said that Socialist International (SI) underscored the two-state solution and called for an international conference on the Mideast peace process.
Highlighting SI’s meeting in the Dominican capital, Santo Domingo, al-Hayat al-Jadida said SI announced the commencement of procedures to protect Palestine and the two-state solution.
Finally, al-Hayat al-Jadida reported Norwegian Foreign Minister Ine Eriksen Soereide warning that Israel’s decision to eject the Temporary International Presence in Hebron (TIPH) “means that that the implementation of an important part of the Oslo Accords in discontinued.”
