RAMALLAH, Wednesday, June 17, 2020 (WAFA) – In an apparent resurgence of the coronavirus disease in the Palestinian territories, 57 new cases were recorded in the last 10 days after doing 6000 random tests, today said Minister of Health Mai Alkaila.
She told WAFA that the epidemic is back as a result of contacts mainly with Palestinians from inside Israel or workers in Israel, explaining that 29 cases were recorded in the last 24 hours mainly in the southern West Bank district of Hebron.
“All of this is because we are trying to get back to normal life in an effort to create a balance between the economy and health, but unfortunately the health protocol was not observed by almost all the institutions and citizens,” she said.
She said that the health protocols will from now on be strictly observed and the state is going to make sure that people in the street and at work will comply with the health instructions, including wearing masks at all times and keeping social distancing.
Alkaila said the lockdown implemented earlier will not be used again but that areas of infection will be isolated in order to monitor and control the infected cases only.
The government ended on May 27 a two-month lockdown imposed after the first corona cases were discovered in Palestine in early March. The lockdown was ended following a sharp drop in corona cases.
(Update: Since the interview was done, 17 new cases were recorded in the West Bank, 16 in the Hebron district alone, bringing the total in the last 10 days of positive cases in Palestine to 74 and 46 in the last 24 hours.)
