RAMALLAH, Monday, July 5, 2021 (WAFA) – Prime minister Mohammed Shtayyeh met with the Canadian foreign minister Marc Garneau in Ramallah, where they discussed the latest political developments and the economic situation.
Shtayyeh stressed the importance of a serious international move in light of the current political vacuum and putting forward an initiative to revive the political process, through the International Quartet and concerned countries to end the occupation and achieve a comprehensive peace in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions.
He called on Canada and the international community to pressure Israel to stop its violations against the Palestinians, its policy of settlement expansion and confiscation of land, especially attempts to expel Palestinians from their homes in East Jerusalem, the repeated incursions into holy sites, and the systematic destruction of any opportunity to embody the establishment of a geographically contiguous Palestinian state.
Shtayyeh called on Canada to recognize the state of Palestine with Jerusalem as its capital, in order to preserve the two-state solution.
He praised Canada's support for the two-state solution and the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination, and its rejection of settlements that violate international law.
Shtayyeh stressed the need for Canada’s support to speed up the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, stressing the importance of strengthening joint cooperation between the two countries at all levels.
