RAMALLAH, Tuesday, August 25, 2020 (WAFA) – Prime Minister Mohammed Shtayyeh discussed today during a meeting in Ramallah with British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab the latest political developments and the British support for Palestine.
speaking at a joint press conference after the meeting, Shtayyeh welcomed Raab’s first visit to Palestine since his appointment as the British Foreign Secretary, expressing hope that the recognition of the state of Palestine will be achieved through this government and hoping for Raab to push in this direction.
He stressed that the Palestinian leadership, headed by President Mahmoud Abbas, has an open mind toward starting a political track based on clear foundations in accordance with international legitimacy and international law because the Palestinians are the main beneficiaries of any serious peace process.
For his part, the British Foreign Secretary said that the scope for renewed coordination between the Palestinian Authority and the Israeli government on financial and security matters and cooperation were discussed during the meeting.
He urged Palestinians to consider very carefully the re-starting of direct dialogue with the government of Israel given the fact that the prospect of annexation has been suspended.
He reaffirmed and reiterated that as a friend of the Palestinian people, the United Kingdom remains committed to a two-state solution negotiated by both sides as the only credible and realistic means of achieving the lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians.
He also announced an aid package worth 2.7 million euros to support Palestine in facing the Corona crisis.
