Israel detains eight Palestinians from West Bank

JENIN, Tuesday, August 18, 2020 (WAFA) – Israeli forces Tuesday overnight detained eight Palestinians from various parts of the West Bank, said the Palestine Prisoner’s Society (PPS).

PPS confirmed in a press release that Israeli forces rounded up two Palestinians, including a 17-year-old teen, after ransacking their families’ houses in Zububa village, west of Jenin city.

In Tubas district, Israeli military vehicles stormed Tayasir village, northeast of Tubas city, where soldiers detained a Fatah activist.

In Nablus district, PPS confirmed an Israeli military raid in Burin village, southwest of the city, resulting in the detention of another.

In Jericho district, another Palestinian was detained in a similar raid in Aqbat Jabr refugee camp.

In Bethlehem district, Israeli forces detained two Palestinian teens after storming and thoroughly searching their families’ houses in separate two raids in Aida and al-Azzeh refugee camps.

Meanwhile, Israeli forces manning the Container checkpoint, east of Bethlehem, detained the brother of Ashraf Halasa, a resident of As-Sawahira Ash-Sharqiya town, southeast of Jerusalem.

Ashraf, 30, was shot and killed by Israeli police purportedly for stabbing and injuring a police officer near Bab Hutta, one of the gates leading to Jerusalem’s flashpoint Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.

Israeli forces frequently raid Palestinian houses almost on a daily basis across the West Bank on the pretext of searching for "wanted" Palestinians, triggering clashes with residents.

These raids, which take place also in areas under the full control of the Palestinian Authority, are conducted with no need for a search warrant, whenever and wherever the military chooses in keeping with its sweeping arbitrary powers.

Under Israeli military law army commanders have full executive, legislative and judicial authority over 3 million Palestinians living in the West Bank. Palestinians have no say in how this authority is exercised.
