British Premier reiterates anti-annexation position in a phone call with President Abbas

RAMALLAH, Wednesday, July 15, 2020 (WAFA) – British Prime Minister Boris Johnson reiterated last night in a telephone call with President Mahmoud Abbas his government’s opposition to Israeli annexation of occupied Palestinian territory and his support for international law.

President Abbas briefed the British Premier on the latest political developments, particularly the Israeli annexation plans, which are rejected by the Palestinians, the Arab governments and the international community.

He expressed appreciation for Britain‘s support for peace based on international legality, and its opposition to the annexation of Palestinian territories, which violates United Nations resolutions, calling on Britain to exert more efforts in this regard.

The President expressed Palestine’s readiness, once the annexation is ceased, to go to negotiations on the basis of international legality under the auspices of the International Quartet with the participation of other countries.

He also briefed the British Prime Minister on the Palestinian efforts to confront the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic, which struck the Palestinian territories, and work to control the spread of the disease, appreciating Britain‘s efforts in combating the pandemic and the assistance it provides to Palestine in this field.

For his part, the British Prime Minister affirmed his country‘s position, as stated in the British Parliament and in his article, in support of achieving peace on the basis of the two-state solution, commitment to implementing UN resolutions, and his rejection of any measures taken by Israel to annex Palestinian lands as violating UN resolutions.

Johnson stressed the importance of reviving the peace process, and that his country will continue to support peace and is ready to exert efforts in this regard.

The two leaders agreed to continue in their contacts and coordination during the coming period.
